Ian's Tiny House

Ian's house went up this weekend. It was pretty great to watch it all happen. Everyone just jumped right into place and found a job or a spot where they could be helpful. My spot was taking photos, though I did have people who were up on ladders hand me a few things and that made me feel useful! So the lighting was tough and I definitely did not take the best photos of my life, though they did get better as the day went on. Here are a few of my favorites:

It's interesting because these aren't the kind of pretty photos I make at weddings. People aren't standing around in their best clothes. So I had to really let go of a lot of my usual criteria when editing. But I like how engrossed everyone is in these photos. There are hands and arms and legs popping in and out of pictures because everyone was all over the place. My personal favorite, in case you were just dying to know, is the photo of the man with the saw and all the sawdust flying up around him, I think that one is pretty :).

Thanksgiving

It was really nice to be home for Thanksgiving. It was exceptionally nice to be at home for Thanksgiving with Stephen's beautiful 6X7 film camera. I really like working with that camera. It really makes me slow down and think about each shot I make. Which is frustrating sometimes when I miss that one moment I can easily get with my digital camera but at the same time the rangefinder really makes me think about what I want the images to say. It also makes these incredibly subtle and quiet images that I am just loving. And best news of all is that Stephen is letting me take the camera home with me for winter break, which means many more to come (though if I keep this up I will really need to get better at scanning!)

This blog has been a real downer lately! Boo me! Well no worries friends I am turning myself around. I know I make it sound like I am about to quit photography any minute but that simply is not possible. I am still being photographic everyday (as Frank suggested) and I am making sure to pick up my camera at least once every day. I am also reading blogs, revisiting my favorite artists, watching documentaries and generally getting inspired. In fact I think I am on the cusp of figuring something out. I can feel it. I have Stephens (BEAUTIFUL) Mamiya range finder which I am very excited about. Once I get the dynamics of focussing and framing with that camera down again I am fully prepared to make some very thoughtful photographs that have been in my mind for some time now.

But today is not the day for ground breaking work, today was just a day of goofing around with my camera and here is what you get:

Nip was practically begging me not to go to work this morning and I ALMOST listened to her...

but image how sad I would have been if I had missed this gem!

I went to Boston last night because I picked my sister up at the airport at 5 am this morning. We had an amazing dinner at Ellen's house and I got to spend time with some new and some old favorites!

All my best photography lately (in my mind at least) has been happening at night. I am excited about these new images but I am honestly totally lost when it comes to working them through in photoshop (any advice is welcomed). I am also becoming continuously more aware of the limitations of my camera. I have been fantasizing about the 50D and the 5D Mark II. Oh if only! But of course then I am wondering if I am trying to fix an inspiration issue with a fancy camera? Maybe? It is always more comforting to blame it on the machine rather than the operator.

jumping off the deep end

So here are some thoughts:

1) I am a little tired of doing commercial work these days. I just feel that I get overwhelmed with deadlines and then I don't do anything that excites me and I just fall back on things I know work and I know are good enough. Plus I have been having to shoot in terrible spaces lately that just depress me when I edit them. Seriously why are all events held in dark dreary places? Why??

2) I have decided that the reason I can't make solid work that I love has nothing to do with a lack of ideas. In fact i know exactly what kinds of photos i want to make. in fact i have about 5 thousand images in my head waiting to be made. The problem is instead a matter of being at the wrong place in my life right now. (Actually in writing that down maybe that is exactly what i need to be photographing right now.) All I want to do is be a part of a family and have children in my day to day life so that I can really photographs from the inside of that world looking out rather than my current dilemma of being on the outside looking in. I want to make photographs like Sally Mann, Tierney Gearon, or even the woman who does this blog. It is SO frustrating to know what I want and simply not have the materials I need. I might as well not have a camera with how stuck I feel. I need to photograph the girls I nanny for more but even then, we go so long without seeing each other it is hard to be up to date on them and their lives enough to really capture their real personalities.

3) I need to get over this issue because my life is not rocketing toward parenthood anytime soon. Maybe I will start photographing all the times in my life that their is an absence of family? That feels really forced but maybe that is what I need to do... force myself to get over all this whining.

4) I am also freaking out a bit because I have come to the realization that this is the last photography I will take...maybe ever. That is terrifying. It is a passing of the baton from external forces pushing me to photograph to relying on my own internal drive. I can't decide if that will be relieving and freeing or overwhelming and crippling. I guess next semester will be a good test because I will still be able to be in the lab alot without actually having to be there. I feel very much like I am standing on the edge of something and I can't decide if I am going to jump or wobble here for a while.

So I have been thinking about self portraits alot lately and in particular the fact that I constantly find myself making self portriats. This feels very strange to me considering how much I actually hate having my photograph taken.

So I have been looking back through the self portraits I have taken over time and I am trying to figure out what it is that draws me back to them. Part of it is definantly that I sometimes am the only person around but I haven't really made those types of self portraits in a while.

though here is one perfect example of that:

Then there was the photo project that I did when my grandma passed away. But in retrospect and through looking at those images I am realizing more and more that it wasn't so much about my feelings about my grandma's passing but was rather focused on feeling of disconnect. This feeling was however amplified by my first real loss experience. When I was going through these images they were actually hard for me to look at. Part of it is that they are so completely raw. They are nothing like the images I generally like to make (you know all those freaking kid pictures). Their is a sadness in these images that is actually palpable to me. But at the same time I do see connections between these images and the photos I make of other people. I try really hard to catch emotions that are as real and present in photos of other people as I did at one point in those images of myself. Which then leads me to the question of whether I am using other people(specifically kids) to express my emotions in a more visually interesting and accessible package.

I am just so much more drawn to the way these kids are experiencing sadness and frustration than I am to images of my own experiences. That might speak to my general discomfort with my own experience of...well, discomfort.

Maybe I need to do more self portraits (like all the time).

Alright, so this is a very (VERY) long over due post that comes with a heart felt apology all around. I could tell you all about the reasons I have not been making any good art in the past month but I will save you the time and just leave it at the fact that I am in a funk.

Except not in the rest of my life, in fact I honestly feel that I can only make good art when the rest of my life is moderately falling apart. We will see how this pans out over the course of my life :/

But I have been shooting (don't you worry!) and I have some new photos to add for your viewing pleasure:

First up some roommate comparisons... I have really been exploring my apartment as in depth this year as I have focused on my home home in the past. So to begin with I am exploring it's inhabitants. It is fun because Caitlin and Mark are much more visually distinct (especially when it comes to their spaces) than my family tends to be.

Next up is the environmental explorers club which I have been volunteering with for the past few months. I do not have the images I want yet but I can keep going back and I think it will get more sucessful as I get to know the kids better. We will see.

Finally we have my visit to Rhode Island with my parents. This was a wonderful weekend and it was the first time I have been back home this semester. But unfortunantly I was only actually at my house for a few hours and then we climbed in the car and headed to RI to visit family. I still really love photographing my parents. they are such interesting people in my mind. But it is new photographing them now that they are empty nesters. They have always done an amazing job of staying interesting people through out parenthood but suddenly I am thrown into seeing them as individuals completely seperate from my sister and I and I can start to see them differently now. I don't know if these pictures capture that at all but that is what is driving my continued photographing of them.

Busy Busy Photo Bee

So another week has flown by. I feel extraordinarily busy right now. I am up at 7 or 730 am, 4 days a weeks for classes and observations/tutoring for my grad classes and then I am staying up way too late for my own good so this has resulted in a huge increase in my napping schedule. But all in all it is really good. I am doing things that I love. However, it has been a bit of a bummer because I have been having a hard time getting my self to photograph. It's just that when I get caught up in other things that I love (like crafting- which is my current obsession) I forget how much I LOVE photographing. Bah, I will have to work on remembering.

But I did get to photograph at stART and going through all those photos has been a real reminder of how much I love making images I am proud of.

Just on a side note- I was having issues with an uncalibrated monitor so the colors on these are off a bit but I will hopefully have that resolved asap.

I am realizing now more than ever that I get this crazy sorta photo-amnesia when I am photographing. I just get into this zone where everything that is going on is broken into these single images in my mind so when I think back on them I don't remember the events in whole but rather little bits an pieces. Also, I get so hyper-focused that I miss what is going on around what I am shooting. Like today a bunch of people told me they had waved to me while I was shooting at stART but I honestly don't remember seeing any of them. I kinda love the zone I get into because it makes time FLY by. I was at stART today for at least 5 hours and it felt like it just whizzed past.

But it was a blast today. I just love being outside and the weather was amazing and there were so many kids there to photograph. All in all, nice work stART team!!! So, I am in the lab now working on those photos and I will have them posted by the end of the night, fingers crossed.

Wedding and Ireland Photos

Well hello strangers! Who knew summer would limit my posting so much! It has been a great break from school but I am ready to head back up to worcester and get life back on some sort of schedule.

This summer brought one really amazing excitement and that was being hired to photograph my cousin's wedding. It was such a whirlwind experience and the day itself was a total mix of excitement and exhaustion, but the finished product has been completely gratifying. You can tell from the images that I am at the beginning of my wedding photography journey but I am more than excited to get more experience (and better equipment!). I have all the images up on my new pbase (pbase.com/anniecohn) but the wedding gallery has a password so let me know if you are interested in looking at the whole set. Other than that I have begun editing my photos from Ireland. That has been a really interesting experience because when I first got back from Ireland I pretty much hated all the pictures I took. None of them lived up to my very current memory of what an amazing place it was. But now that some time has passed I am actually enjoying going through them and reliving the experience. I have about half of them on the pbase too (the rest will be uploaded soon). But again I will put some of my faves here:

So summer is here....finally! I am doing a lot of babysitting right now so I haven't had lots of photo time. But yesterday I had the whole day off and no images to work on so I did some photoshop challenge....

Hi from Ireland

So here i am in Ireland, looking at the most beautiful ocean view I have ever seen. It seriously blows my mind. I have been snapping away and my family has been very kind to let me drive around half hanging out of the car and constantly saying things like "stay there" "turn towards me" and "take 3 steps to your right." More than anything I am realizing how much I am NOT a landscape photographer. I have tons and tons of photos but very few (if any) have that spark that makes a great landscape. I have an even greater appreciation for what Cade and Frank do.

The flight here was a train wreck! It is a long story (and best told with hand gestures) but we made an emergency landing in Goosebay, Labrador. Thats in Canada (I had to look it up on a map!). The plane was fine but some woman was having heart palpations and well, it was a mess (don't feel too bad she was well enough to walk off the plane!). But when they decided to make our landing we were over the Atlantic ocean so they turned around and went back to Canada. This took and hour and then it took 5 hours to back track. THEN they landed us in Dublin rather than Shannon because the pilots can only fly for so long and we had to switch flight crews and then fly down to Shannon. So our 6 hour flight became 14 hours and we then drove to Cork which was another 3 hours and our cottage here in Tragumna was another hour past Cork. All in all we traveled for about 24 hours straight with my 76 year old grandmother.

But don't get me wrong, it was totally worth it. It is beyond amazing here.

Sunday I took a beautiful walk with my sister and my dad and we climbed down a beautiful set of cliffs and went right down to the water. That night we went out to the local pub - The Skibereen Eagle- and I had myself a guiness and then a few Bulmer's hard apple cider (amazing!) and once we were all a bit toasty we went home and had the deepest sleeps of our lives.

Yesterday we went to Mizen Head which is a lighthouse at the "corner of Ireland" and we saw baby seals sunning themselves on the rocks. This was after a few hours of getting lost which in my opinion was just as beautiful as getting to where we were going.

Today we went to Coppinger's Court which is a castle that belonged to my ancestors and burned out in the 1600's.

I will post pictures in a while when I get stuff updated. I miss you all! I am available by email!

Oh yeah, and I am moving here after college and I am getting a cow and 2 chickens (named lavern and shirley) and some sort of sheep dog.

Well hello, long time no see. I have disappeared from blog-land because the last ten days have been sooooo busy I can't even believe everything got done...or at least most everything.
Lets recap:
-3 year olds birthday party (both in digital and with Stephen's camera)
-International Gala poster photo shoot
-Emily's surprise birthday party
-Easter weekend was spent doing family photography and lots of personal work with both cameras
-Did a shoot at a global warming panel discussion for Clark
-Photo shoot for the Higgins Gallery on campus (this did not turn out because my card DIED! and that was not awesome)
-Nick's grandma's 75th birthday party

In addition to this my photo-editing computer arrived (this is by far the best birthday present I have ever gotten-Thanks mom and dad!!!)

So I have been editing like crazy and feeling somewhat like I can't keep up with the number of files I have- also I am pretty sure my external hard drive is about to be full so I will need to move some old files onto my computer...yadayadayada

Wow, it has been a while since I posted. I have been doing a lot of shooting but I haven't had much time to edit that work yet because I have been editing this. What is it you ask? Well, the senior art majors here at clark are having a Thesis show on April 23 and they wanted their invitation to feature them on a 13 person bicycle. Little did I know this was the start of a really cool challenge for me. So above you see the final product. It is a composite that was put together in photoshop. The file itself is HUGE and I have a print of it hanging on the wall that is 17 inches by 6 feet! The invitation itself is going to be trifold and when you open it up the image will be across the entire inside. It was really fun to do and Mike S. let me use his tablet which was just beyond awesome so I ordered one for myself and it should be here monday (woohoo!).

Old Photographs Discovered

I feel like I am really starting to find a recognizable style in my work. I did not shoot enough over break because I was generally very busy being super lazy. So now I am back at Clark
without anything really new to work on, so instead I have been going through old files and exploring how I have gotten to where I am now. I tried to stay with the idea of children existing within their own worlds and how these worlds, if looked at with a close eye, are often vastly different from the world we exist within. This idea fascinates me. I am feeling a little guilty that I have sort of abandoned the wedding dress project, but in reality it just isn't doing it for me right now, and I know I will make my way back there when the time is right.

Oh, also, I netflixed the film about Tierney Gearon called The Mother Project, and I am just beyond in love with the film and her work and most of all her lifestyle. She just goes all around traveling with her children and photographing them as they grow and all I could think about was how much I want to have that. I am also blown away by how her photographs are both smart and emotional. It is hard to be able to do both of those things.

And, on top of all that Stephen is going to lend me his 2 1/4 film camera and I am going to try shooting color film for a while. This is terribly exciting but also pretty nerve racking because I have never worked with color film before and I haven't work with film at all in a long while. So onward we march.

I am going to try to title and at least give an approximate date for my photos from this point forward but we will see how it goes....

The Wonders of Play

I had an amazing time this weekend photographing the girls I watch in the summer. They are just awesome kids and we are all really comfortable with each other so the girls pretty much ignored the camera. I have a lot of really cute picture of the girls that I love, but then I also got some really awesome pictures of the girls really being kids and all the craziness that comes along with childhood. I don't think they are anywhere near as dark as Sarah Small's work and they are much less posed than JeongMee Yoon's project but I do feel like they capture the wild world that kids live in.

A special thanks is in order for Autumn, Olivia, and Kayla for being really great models. And to Audra and Shawn for letting me photograph the girls.

Narcissis and Echo

Alright folks, today I decided to embrace my narcissism.

The idea of this project sparked my interest a bit in the story of Narcissis (here is a long summary)(here is a short summary). I also liked the part of Echo in the story, which I had never really heard before. I found a painting that I like by John W. Waterhouse and the image I created is a bit of a play on that.

Stephen recommended Robert ParkHarrison (http://www.parkeharrison.com) and I must say it is interesting work. It is amazing that he does this with film. I am not sure I would want my photos to be as psychologically dark as his but it has given me a few ideas.

Katie in the wedding dress

Katie was an amazingly good sport and let me take pictures of her in the wedding dress this Sunday(which happened to be the coldest night ever!!). We started by going to the top of the parking garage and trying to do some outdoor night shots but it was freezing, Katie was getting hypothermia and my flash refused to fire. So we moved inside. We went to Spiritual Haze which is the local hookah bar that Katie works at. Vicky, the owner (who is awesome), let us set up a hookah and just shoot away. All in all it was a blast. I really like some of the pictures that came out of it too. I honestly can not wait for warmer weather so i don't have to torture my models and make then work outside in the freezing cold. However, the rain is pouring down on top of last nights snow fall and it doesn't look like it is getting warmer any time soon. Photo is going really well but I am still looking for people who are willing to volunteer their dresses. Keep checking in however, because my goal is to do at least one new shoot a week. Cade is itching to get into the dress so that will be coming soon

I spent a decent portion of Tuesday's photo class taking pictures of people. It was fun to play with my 50 mm lense because it goes down to 1.8 and I was able to shoot in relatively low light without a flash.

Wedding Photography extended

Hey everyone! Right now I am at the start of a new project that I am very excited about. I am working on extending my wedding portfolio by creating what I hope will be unique and interesting bridal portraits. To do this I bought a wedding dress on ebay and I am using friends as models (for this shoot my sister Emily modeled). I came up with the concept seperately but after some research I found a website called trashthedress.com which focuses on similar idea. Basically my plan is to ignore the social expectations that come along with formal attire and create portraits that are fun and really capture the subjects personality despite what they are wearing. This first shoot was largely exploratory but I do feel like I got some good images and I am excited to continue editing. I am beyond excited about all of this right now!

Well here goes:

If anyone is interested I am looking for volunteers who have prom dresses or even wedding dresses (that you are done using :) ) and who want to model.... because honestly when are you going to wear that dress again and wouldn't you rather have fun, unique portraits to cherish rather than an old dress sitting in your attic collecting dust? Let me know!

This Christmas I photographed my family's big Christmas Eve party. There are some candids and lots of posed portraits. The goal was to get a big group shot and then a series of smaller group shots of each family. I am in the process of editing them now so they should be up in a few days.

I haven't posted in a while so in the interest in catching up I am putting up the photos that were my final project for last semesters photo class. They are in two parts. The first is my fisheye project. These images were taken with my toy fisheye camera and I developed the negatives. The negatives were scanned and digitally corrected because the toy camera scratched them significantly and it would have been next to impossible to spot tone out the scratches by hand. The digital files were then printed on 13" by 19" semigloss paper. The second set is my final selection of my best wedding photographs. Some of these images may have been posted here before, but I think it is cool to see them all together as a complete set. There are two from each wedding I worked at last semester. I am amazed at how much I learned over the course of the semester.

I had my first paying photo shoot today which was beyond exciting. I was TA-ing this morning before the shoot so I had lots of time to set up lighting and such, which went well. Stephen was really helpful. We used the spotlight to make a gradient effect in the background. I had met another photographer this weekend, through Erika, named Corey. He does portraiture and was very helpful via email as well. Check out his website coreyfitzgerald.com.

Well, then it was 2pm and the shoot started. It was very exciting to direct someone and actually feel like I had a grasp of what I was doing. It is actually less awkward if you take control and we both seemed relieved that someone was the leader (it even surprised me a little that that someone was me). So Tim was my subject today and he was wonderful. He played along with me while I worked on being confident and I think we got him some good head shot photos for the commercial he is trying act in.

Here are a few of them. The first one is my favorite and the next four are the ones he chose to send to the director of the commercial....

Another weekend, another wedding. This one was pretty good. The lighting was a little tough for the actual ceremony because there were long and harsh shadows but the ceremony/reception site was lovely and minimal flash was needed during the reception which is always nice. New Lens

I got a new wide angle lens (the canon 10-22 Ultra Wide Zoom) and I am inlove plain and simple. It creates a new need to get REALLY close to my subjects which is a little bit intese (especially with worcester street photography) but I think it will make for some very lovely wedding phots. I am a little nervous to use it at an actual wedding though because I don't feel totally confident with it yet. However, as with everything it seems that actually doing it will be the best way for me to get comfortable. I have another wedding this weekend so that should be good. Here are some photos I shot with my new lens....

I went to my second wedding with Erika and Kyle this weekend. This wedding was in Boston. It was a nice wedding and another great experience. I feel like I am getting more pictures that are working. I also just got a Canon 10-22mm lens so I am excited to see what pictures I can make with that. Here are some of the first shots I have edited....

A large portion of my independant study this semester is going to weedings with Erika Sidor (Erikasidor.com). Yesterday was the first wedding I went to and I was able to take a lot of pictures. It was amazing. Erika and her assistant Kyle were really helpful and are showing me a lot about working with a flash. I also got a sense for the pace of the wedding and where the photographer fits into all of it. I shot alot of pictures (most of which are no good- luckily no one is relying on me yet) but I do feel like I got a few good shots and I will post them as I edit. Here are a few to start....

I got a really cool fish eye lens camera for my birthday in May (lomography.com) and didn't really know where to go with it but since I have been back at school I have been really running wild with this strange world that the fish eye lens creates. Right now I am playing with perspective and view point but any ideas you have are greatly appreciated. Lighting has been some what of an issue because every frame seems to develope differently even when pictures are shot in quick succession (sp ??) but with some careful printing I have been able to compensate. Here are a few of my first images I have printed and scanned....
